news this week...

25/9/2019

Just two announcements this week:
On Wednesday (25th) at 730 pm, there is an armoury workshop in the club.  Please bring any bodywires or foils that need to be rewired or fixed.
The 'as best we know' schedule is on the documents part of this website.  I need to add the YDP events, and will do so in the next days but this is the tournaments as I am aware.
Please note that this is advance of the official announcements, but it helps to plan out the Ontario Winter Games qualifies for y12 and y14 athletes.

Two Notes:

14/9/2019

1. We are setting up a new streamlined accounting system, so you will be receiving invoices electronically.  We are in the process of reconciling online payments with the accounting system, so please bear with us if you have paid and we sent an invoice.  We should have everything running smoothly by the end of the week.

2. The newly minted Youth Development Program is now live for Ontario.  I am biased, as we have designed the program, but it is our belief that this will help develop our youth athletes in a more intentional way and provide a regular platform for competition.  In the fees are included 4 competitions (being set up) and 1 training camp.  There are rewards for participation elsewhere and a pretty spectacular bonus for the top three athletes.  Details are here:

OFA licences, Parent-to-Parent Sale and more...

9/9/2019

Hi Folks

I hope the week of school start up, new (old) routines have settled you in by now.  We officially opened the club Thursday for the competitive and elite programs, scrapped off some more (not much as most were very active) rust today and are now in the normal routine of our published schedule.
This means ALL programs start, including Wednesday pre-elite, this week.  Beginner lessons start on Sunday and newly minted (if there is desire) on Monday evenings.
Our London based programs will start as soon as we are cleared by the school board, and we are aiming for October 7. Stay tuned.

Some Important Business:
1. The OFA/CFF licences are finally active.  All non beginner fencers (e.g., those not enrolled in our beginner programs in which the club pays the insurance membership fee as part of the fees) are required to join the OFA/CFF.  The benefit is development of the sport, accounting of numbers for governmental support for our national athletes and, well, a requirement.  If you have a question about which to join, let me know.  You will be given, if the first time, a number that is your CFF number, it is lifelong.

2. Parent to Parent Sale:  Next Sunday, we will have our parent to parent sale.  The guidelines are pretty simple.  You bring your stuff that someone may have outgrown or mistakenly sized, we check for safety if necessary, you price, they haggle and it leaves the club.  If you leave it in the club, we own it which means it sits in the armoury until I remember to throw it out.

3. Tournaments:  The OFA is slow to release dates, so hold on.  We are looking just like you for them.

4. Recreational Fencers:  Don't forget to purchase your memberships in the store.

It was a great experience to see everyone back in the club.

Updated SFO Athlete / Parent Handbook

5/9/2019

Please find our revised 2019-20 Handbook in the documents section of this website, and many thanks to Nancy Orr for providing content from the parents' perspective.  Please note the codes of conducts that have been updated to reflect both the OFA/CFF requirements of participation in Respect in Sport and the financial policies of the club.  You will need to sign the codes of conduct, as will the athletes.
In 2019-20, the OFA and CFF followed our lead in joining Respect in Sport movement, and your mandatory parental participation will be transferred to the database as they built off of our website.  If you have not done the Respect in Sport on line training for parents, I will send out links next week (or use the link provided above).  It is a worthwhile training that reinforces the values our club seeks to create in our athletes.

And we're back

3/9/2019

Hello Folks,
I hope everyone is having a great first day of school, work or re-entry into the season after a long summer.  Robyn and I are back from Italy (see photos) where we had the fantastic chance to work with Guilio Tomassini at his camp.  Maestro Tomassini has produced the most (over 100) world champions, and most Olympic gold medallists in our sport - and he is far from done.

Just a quick reminder (more tomorrow):

The first open training of the season is Thursday from 7-9 for competitive fencers and from 5 pm for elite fencers.  Free fencing for recreational members is from 7:30.
Sunday marks the beginning of the formal programs with schedule as per website.
