Thanks to the Board members of the club, and especially to Robyn Godfrey who has gotten our website completely up to date. They work behind the scenes and do a lot of things that are necessary to run the club. Your 2018 Board are: Darren (President), Robyn (VP), Melanie Wooler (Treasurer), Shawn Davies (Parent Representative) and Julie White Roy (Secretary).
AGM: Due to Coach Marks and one other board member being away at the North American Cup on the 14th October, we will need to find another date for the AGM. Stay tuned as it is difficult to get five Board members, tournaments and life organized.
The tournament season has begun, and congratulations to Scott Bell for his gold medal in veteran's men foil and Nolan for his 8th place finish in senior men at the Vango Summer Open.
Looking ahead, the Brock Open will be the target tournament for many of our competitive fencers on Nov 17-18. There are other tournaments appearing, and you should check the OFA website (upcoming events) or the posted list of tournaments in the fencing salle and on our calendar as they drop irregularly. Elite fencers should target both the Mustang Invitation and the Canada Cup. A new tournament has dropped - the Vango Young Dragons - on Nov 24-25 and this will be a targeted event for the pre-elite group as there is a Y8 event in Toronto. Competitive Fencers should consult, again, the OFA website for up to date information. Next weekend is Thanksgiving, and it has been the tradition of SFO to not have any training over that weekend so we can all enjoy, and be thankful for, the special people in our lives. There is NO training on the Sat or Sunday of the 6-7th October, and we resume as normal on the Tuesday 9th October.
Those looking for registration information can now email our registrar (Julie White) directly:
[email protected] Thanks to our previous webmaster, Neil Humphrey, for helping to set this up Just a friendly reminder that this Sunday, Sept 16 starting with the 10 am training time and all through the day, we are hosting the parent to parent sale for used or outgrown equipment. Here are the ground-rules:
1. The price is negotiated between parent and parent - the club is not involved except to make sure the gear meets safety and rule protocol. 2. You must take any unsold gear home, or it becomes, de facto, part of the club (e.g., we put it away and forget about it until next year when we sell it deeply discounted). 3. If you leave gear for the day, and don't return until the end of the day then you must provide an envelope into which people can put your payment. SFO does not collect your money for obvious reasons. Please put a name and contact number on the envelope in case someone wants to buy the gear but doesn't have correct cash etc so they can contact you. 4. It is an honour system, we just allow a space to sell - not police it. We can put money aside in the envelopes, but that is about it and there are lots of people who come through the salle on Sundays. 5. Finally, caveat emptor! Buyer beware. If you buy a used blade, then there is no expectation that it will survive one, five or 500 bouts. Likewise body wires or lames, they may or may not be 100%. It is used gear. Being a not for profit, SFO holds an annual general meeting (AGM) for its membership. Ours will be on 8:45 am on Oct 14th at the club. It should take no longer than 45 mins. Reports will be sent to membership two weeks before.
All members are welcome. Two relevant things for members to consider before the meeting: Purpose: Stratford Fencing Ontario (SFO) exists to promote the sport of fencing in Stratford Ontario, Canada and wider. It exists to promote the healthy benefit of sport in our members, coaches and community. It strives to ask members to become their best self; and, actively works to be a location of excellence of intention, habit and execution including physical, emotional and moral realms. As such, SFO is committed to be a place of compassionate community in which sport excellence is but one manifestation of a deeper commitment to each other. Membership: 1. A member of SFO is defined as a person who pays fees, monthly or sessional, to SFO or a person who has fees paid in lieu for service. In the case of minors, one parent or legal guardian is a voting member for the purposes of the AGM. In the case of multiple minors being members, parents or legal guardians still have but one vote at the AGM. 2. All members, or their parent/guardians, are required to take Respect in Sport training within one month of joining. Failure to do so will result in membership being withheld. Those with an equivalency determined by the BoD are exempt. 3. Coaches and Board members are, de facto, voting members of SFO despite not paying fees. 4. Members of SFO are bound to our published Code of Conduct, including that for parents or guardians. 5. Failure to make monthly payment for two consecutive months shall preclude membership rights until payment is made. 6. In the case of sessional members, membership is current only while sessional payments are covered. At the end of the session, membership ends. If you wish to attend but cannot, you may appoint a proxy vote in asigned letter to the secretary Julie White-Roy on the day of the AGM. Reminder! A condition of membership in the club is that parents, or those over the age of 16, take Respect in Sport training. It takes about 1.5 hrs of time on the web, can be done by a family (including minors) as one and is well worth a reminder to us all. Please do your training by the end of September.
https://stratfordfencingparent.respectgroupinc.com/ We will seek to have a parent to parent sale on Sunday 15th of September throughout the training times. We ask that you price all gear you wish to sell with clear instruction on whom it belongs to, and pick up any unsold gear. Coaches have final word on the safety of all gear sold, but everything else is your parent to parent business. Unclaimed gear becomes property of the club.
Training resumes for competitive and elite teams on Thursday, Sept 6th at 7pm. Let's shake the rust off those blades, only a few weeks to the first competition of the season!
